Using AI for Customer Research and Audience Insights

· 2 min read

Good marketing starts with understanding customers. Businesses often have a pile of useful material that nobody has time to read: reviews, survey answers, emails, chat logs and call notes. AI can help turn that pile into insight.

What you can analyse

  • Product and service reviews, yours and competitors'.
  • Survey responses with open comments.
  • Support tickets and chat transcripts.
  • Sales call notes and enquiry forms.
  • Social media comments.
  • Forum and community discussions.

What to ask AI to find

  1. Common problems: what frustrates people before they buy?
  2. Desired outcomes: what do they want to achieve?
  3. Language: the words and phrases customers use, which you can use in ads and web copy.
  4. Objections: reasons people hesitate or choose a competitor.
  5. Segments: different groups with different needs.
  6. Praise and complaints: what you do well and what to fix.

A simple process

  1. Collect and clean. Gather the text, remove personal details and keep sources organised.
  2. Ask clear questions. For example: "List the top ten themes in these reviews with counts and example quotes."
  3. Check the evidence. Ask for direct quotes so you can verify the findings in the original text.
  4. Compare segments. Ask how themes differ by product, location or customer type.
  5. Turn insights into action. Update messaging, landing pages, ad angles and products.

Building personas carefully

AI can help draft customer personas from real data. Treat them as working hypotheses, not facts. Real conversations with customers are still the best source, and a short interview often reveals what no summary can.

Privacy and ethics

  • Remove names, emails and other personal data before using external tools.
  • Check the privacy terms of the tool.
  • Follow data protection rules such as GDPR for European customers.
  • Do not use sensitive information in ways people would not expect.

Limits of AI analysis

  • It can overgeneralise or invent patterns.
  • It reflects only the data you give it.
  • Small samples can mislead.
  • It does not replace actually talking to customers.

Summary

AI helps you read faster, but the value comes from asking good questions and acting on what you find.
