Using AI for Social Media Planning: Calendars, Captions and Repurposing

· 2 min read

Posting consistently is hard when you have a business to run. AI can remove much of the planning and drafting work, so your time goes into the parts that need a human.

1. Build a content plan

Give the AI your business, audience, goals and main topics, and ask for a monthly calendar with a mix of post types, such as educational, behind the scenes, customer stories and offers. Adjust it to match your real events, products and capacity.

2. Generate ideas from real material

AI works better when it starts from your own content. Feed it:

  • Customer questions and reviews.
  • Sales call notes.
  • Blog posts, videos or webinars.
  • Product details and news.

Ask it to turn each into several post ideas.

3. Draft captions

Provide your tone of voice and a sample of posts you like. Ask for a few versions of each caption, with different hooks. Edit to add personality, facts and a clear call to action.

4. Repurpose content

One piece of content can become many:

  • A blog post becomes a LinkedIn post, a carousel outline, an email and several short tips.
  • A video becomes clips, quotes and a written summary.
  • A customer review becomes a graphic and a story post.

AI can create first versions of each format, saving hours.

5. Adapt for each platform

A message that works on LinkedIn may be wrong for Instagram. Ask the AI to rewrite for the style, length and audience of each platform, then review.

6. Hashtags, alt text and scheduling support

AI can suggest relevant hashtags, write image descriptions and help create posting schedules.

7. Analyse performance

Export your post data and ask for patterns: which topics, formats and times did best? Use the insights to adjust next month's plan, and check the conclusions against the numbers.

What to keep human

  • Real photos, stories and opinions.
  • Replying to comments and messages.
  • Sensitive or fast-moving topics.
  • Final approval of everything published.

Pitfalls

  • Generic captions that could belong to any business.
  • Over-posting low-value content.
  • Using AI-generated images that look artificial or misleading.
  • Forgetting the platform's rules on disclosure for some kinds of AI content.

Summary

Use AI for planning, drafting and repurposing, and keep your voice and judgement in the final result.
