Facebook Ads Reporting: The Numbers That Matter and the Ones That Do Not
Ads Manager is full of numbers. Most of them are useful context, and only a few tell you whether the campaign is making money. Knowing the difference stops you from celebrating the wrong things.
Metrics that matter most
- Cost per result: per purchase or per qualified lead. This is the headline number.
- Return on ad spend (ROAS): revenue divided by ad spend. Useful for e-commerce.
- Conversion rate: the share of visitors who complete the action, which shows how well the page converts.
- Customer acquisition cost (CAC): total cost to win one customer, including everything you spend, not just ad spend.
- Profit: after product cost, shipping, fees and ads.
Supporting metrics, helpful for diagnosis
- CTR (click-through rate): shows whether the ad attracts attention.
- CPM (cost per 1,000 impressions): shows how expensive the audience is.
- Frequency: how often the same person sees the ad.
- Landing page view rate: a gap between clicks and page views can mean slow loading.
These explain why a result moved but should not be the goal.
Vanity numbers
Likes, reach and video views feel good, and they matter for awareness campaigns, but they are not proof of sales on their own. Do not judge a sales campaign by them.
Beware of the attribution gap
Meta reports results with its own attribution window and can claim credit for sales that would have occurred anyway, or miss sales that come later. Compare Ads Manager numbers with your real orders, your analytics and your bank account.
A simple weekly report
Keep it to one page:
- Spend, results and cost per result against last week.
- Best and worst ads, with a reason.
- What you changed and what you will test next.
- One recommendation.
Questions a good report answers
- Are we making money, and how do we know?
- What is working that we should do more of?
- What should we stop?
- What risks or changes should we expect?
Summary
Focus on cost per result, ROAS and profit, use other numbers for diagnosis, and check ads data against real sales.
