How to Choose a Digital Marketing Agency: 12 Questions to Ask
Choosing an agency is a major decision. Presentations all sound impressive, so use clear questions that reveal how a team really works.
Before you start
Know your goals, rough budget, timeframe and what you have already tried. The clearer you are, the easier it is to compare proposals.
The questions
1. What experience do you have in my industry or with similar businesses?
Look for relevant experience, not only large brand names.
2. Can you show examples of work and results?
Ask what was done, what changed and how it was measured. Be sceptical of results with no context.
3. Who will work on my account?
Meet the people who will actually do the work, not only the sales team.
4. How do you build a strategy for a new client?
A good answer starts with your customers and goals, not a standard package.
5. How do you measure success?
Look for focus on leads, sales and return, not just likes and impressions.
6. What will I receive each month?
A clear list of deliverables and meetings avoids disappointment.
7. How do you report, and how often?
Regular, plain-language reports are a good sign.
8. Who owns the ad accounts, website, data and creative?
You should own them. Avoid arrangements where you lose everything if you leave.
9. How do you use AI and automation?
A modern agency uses these tools for speed, with people reviewing the results and following platform rules.
10. What is your pricing structure?
Understand the fees, ad spend, set-up costs and contract length. Ask what is not included.
11. How do you handle communication?
Know your main contact, response times and how problems are escalated.
12. What happens if results are slow?
You want honest discussion and a plan, not excuses.
Warning signs
- Guaranteed rankings, followers or sales.
- Very low prices that seem too good to be true.
- No explanation of methods, or reliance on risky shortcuts.
- Pressure to sign quickly.
- Refusal to share access to your own accounts.
Check references
Ask to speak with a current or past client, and look at independent reviews.
Start small if unsure
A short trial project or a three-month agreement lets you test the working relationship before a long commitment.
Summary
Choose an agency that listens, explains clearly, reports honestly and treats your goals as its own.
