Instagram Ads vs Facebook Ads: Where Should Your Budget Go?

· 2 min read

You buy Instagram and Facebook ads in the same place, so the real question is not which platform to pick but which placements to use and what to show on each.

Same system, different behaviour

Both platforms are managed through Meta Ads Manager and share the same targeting tools. What differs is how people use them.

  • Facebook tends to be used for news, groups, communities and local information. Its audience skews older on average, and it works well for local services, events, e-commerce and B2B outreach.
  • Instagram is visual and discovery driven. It often does well for fashion, beauty, food, travel, fitness, design and brands that sell on look and feel.

Audience mixes change over time and by country, so check your own data rather than relying on stereotypes.

Placements: where your ad appears

You can use automatic placements, which let Meta spread your budget across Feed, Stories, Reels and more, or choose manually. Automatic placements are a good default because the system moves spend to where results are cheapest. Manual control makes sense when a placement clearly performs badly or when your creative only suits one format.

Format needs

  1. Feed: square or 4:5 images and video.
  2. Stories and Reels: full vertical 9:16, with important text away from the top and bottom edges.
  3. Carousels: several images to show products or tell a short story.

An ad that is built for the feed often looks wrong in Stories. Prepare versions for each format.

How to choose

  • Selling a visual consumer product: lean toward Instagram placements, with strong vertical video.
  • Local services or older customers: Facebook is often stronger.
  • B2B: Facebook and Instagram can both work, but LinkedIn may be a better fit for decision makers.
  • Not sure: run automatic placements and examine the breakdown by platform after enough data.

Look at cost per result, not cost per click

A placement with cheap clicks may bring poor leads. Compare cost per purchase or cost per qualified lead.

Keep the message consistent

People often see your brand on both platforms. Use the same offer, colours and tone, even when the format differs.

Summary

Start with automatic placements, prepare creative for every format, and let results show where to focus.
