LinkedIn Profile Optimization: Headline, About Section, Banner and More

· 2 min read

Your LinkedIn profile is the base for everything else. Posts and engagement bring people to it, so it needs to convince them within seconds. Here is how to build one that does.

1. Profile photo

Use a recent, clear photo of your face with good light and a plain background. Smile naturally and fill the frame. A professional photo is often the first thing people judge.

2. Banner image

The banner is free advertising space. Use it to say who you help or what you do, add a simple brand design, and consider a contact line or website. Avoid default backgrounds.

3. Headline

The headline appears next to your name everywhere: in search, comments and messages. Do not just write a job title. Say what you do and for whom.

  • Weak: "Marketing Manager at ABC Ltd"
  • Stronger: "I help B2B software companies get qualified leads from LinkedIn and search"

Use the words your buyers would search.

4. About section

Write the About section for the reader, not as a biography. A simple structure:

  1. Open with the problem you solve.
  2. Explain how you help and what makes your approach different.
  3. Add proof such as results, years of experience or types of clients.
  4. End with a clear next step: how to contact you.

Use short paragraphs, because many people read on phones. The first lines show before "see more", so make them count.

5. Featured section

Pin your best items: a case study, a lead magnet, a booking link, a popular post. It is a free landing page on your profile.

6. Experience

For each role, describe what you achieved, not just your duties. Use real numbers where you have them, and be accurate.

7. Skills and recommendations

List the skills you want to be found for, and ask satisfied clients or colleagues for recommendations. A few specific recommendations carry more weight than a long list of skills.

8. Custom URL and settings

Shorten your profile URL to your name. Turn on creator mode or the relevant settings if you post regularly, and make sure your contact information is complete.

9. Keywords

Include the terms people search for in your headline, About section and experience. Write naturally, not stuffed.

10. Check from the viewer's side

View your profile as a stranger would. Does it say who you help within five seconds? Is there a clear way to contact you?

Summary

A strong profile is clear, specific and focused on the visitor. Do it before you post, so the extra attention has somewhere good to land.
