Retargeting: How to Win Back People Who Almost Bought

· 2 min read

Most people who visit a website do not buy on the first visit. They compare, get distracted or simply are not ready. Retargeting lets you show ads to people who already know you, and it is usually one of the most efficient parts of an ad account.

What retargeting is

Retargeting, also called remarketing, shows ads to people who have already interacted with your business. They might have visited your site, watched your video, added a product to their cart or engaged with your page. Because they already know you, they are closer to a decision than a cold audience.

Build audiences by intent

Not all visitors are equal. Create separate audiences:

  1. Cart abandoners: added to cart or started checkout but did not buy. Highest intent.
  2. Product or service viewers: looked at a specific page.
  3. All site visitors: a wider group for a reminder.
  4. Engaged social users: watched videos or interacted with posts.

Use shorter time windows for high-intent groups, such as 7 days for cart abandoners, and longer ones for casual visitors, such as 30 to 90 days.

Match the message to the stage

  • Cart abandoners: remind them of the product, address common doubts like delivery or returns, and consider a small incentive if your margins allow.
  • Product viewers: show reviews, benefits and answers to questions.
  • Casual visitors: share useful content, case studies or a lower-commitment offer.

Exclude buyers

Always exclude people who have recently purchased from your retargeting. Few things waste more money, or annoy customers more, than showing ads for something they just bought.

Control frequency

Showing the same ad many times a day turns interest into irritation. Watch the frequency number, rotate creative, and keep the window sensible.

Retargeting needs traffic first

Retargeting works from an audience, and that audience comes from other marketing. If very few people visit your site, the retargeting pool will be too small to spend on. Cold campaigns and retargeting work together.

Privacy points

Make sure your consent and privacy setup is correct for your visitors, particularly in Europe, the UK and California. Have your privacy policy reviewed.

Measure it correctly

Retargeting often looks better in reports because some of those people would have bought anyway. Judge it as part of the whole funnel and compare overall results, not only the retargeting campaign alone.

Summary

Segment by intent, tailor the message, exclude buyers and limit frequency.
