WordPress, Custom Code or Site Builder: How to Choose a Website Platform

· 2 min read

Choosing a platform is one of the first decisions in a website project, and it affects cost, flexibility and maintenance for years. There is no single best option, only the best match for your needs.

Site builders (Wix, Squarespace and similar)

Strengths

  • Quick to launch, with templates and drag-and-drop editing.
  • Hosting and security are included.
  • Good for simple business sites and portfolios.

Limits

  • Less flexibility for custom features.
  • Monthly fees continue, and moving to another platform later can be difficult.
  • SEO and speed controls are more limited, depending on the platform.

Shopify and e-commerce platforms

Platforms built for online shops handle products, payments, shipping and stock. They are a strong choice if selling online is the main goal. Custom design is possible, though advanced changes may need a developer.

WordPress

WordPress powers a large share of websites and offers great flexibility through themes and plugins. It is excellent for blogs, content-rich sites and business sites that need good SEO.

Strengths

  • Highly customisable and widely supported.
  • Strong SEO tools and a huge developer community.
  • You own your site and can host it where you choose.

Limits

  • Needs regular updates, backups and security care.
  • Too many plugins can slow a site.
  • Quality depends heavily on the theme and developer.

Custom development

A site built with custom code, using frameworks and your own design, gives full control over design, performance and features. It suits businesses with unique needs, such as web applications, complex integrations or high performance demands.

Limits: higher upfront cost, longer build time and the need for ongoing developer support.

How to choose

Ask yourself:

  1. What is the main goal: information, leads, selling products or running an application?
  2. How much will the content change, and who will update it?
  3. What is your budget now, and for maintenance later?
  4. Do you need special features, bookings, memberships or integrations?
  5. How important are speed and SEO?

A rough guide

  • Simple brochure site, small budget: a site builder or a light WordPress setup.
  • Content marketing and SEO focus: WordPress or a custom blog.
  • Online shop: Shopify, WooCommerce or similar.
  • Unique features or tools: custom development.

Think about ownership and maintenance

Know who owns the domain, hosting and content, and who handles updates and backups. Avoid being locked into arrangements you cannot leave.

Summary

Match the platform to your goals and your ability to maintain it, not to what is fashionable.
