LinkedIn Outreach Without Spam: Connection Requests and Messages That Get Replies
Everyone has received a LinkedIn message that starts with a connection and ends with a sales pitch. Most are ignored. Outreach can still work, but it needs a more respectful approach.
Start with the right people
Define who you want to reach: industry, role, company size and location. Looking for the wrong people and sending hundreds of messages will not help you. A smaller, better list performs better.
Prepare your profile first
When someone receives your request, they will click your profile. If it is unclear, they will decline. Fix your headline, photo and About section before you start.
Connection requests
A short note often helps, but it does not have to be long.
- Mention something real: a shared interest, a post of theirs you liked, a mutual group.
- Say why you want to connect, in one sentence.
- Do not pitch in the request.
Example: "Hi Anna, I enjoyed your post on hiring in fintech. I work with similar teams on marketing and would be glad to follow your work."
The first message after they accept
Thank them and keep it light. Ask a relevant question or offer something useful, such as a short resource. Do not paste a long sales script.
Follow-ups
- Give people a few days.
- Add value each time instead of repeating "just checking in".
- If you get no reply after a couple of follow-ups, stop.
- If someone says no, respect it.
What to avoid
- Mass copy-paste messages. People can tell.
- Automation tools that break LinkedIn's terms. They put your account at risk.
- Instant pitches. Build a relationship first.
- Misleading claims. Be clear about who you are and what you offer.
- Ignoring privacy rules. Do not collect or use data beyond what is allowed, especially for European contacts.
Mix outreach with content
People who see your posts before your message are more likely to respond. Outreach works best alongside regular content and engagement.
Track results
Record how many requests you sent, how many were accepted, how many replied and how many conversations became meetings. Improve the weakest step.
Summary
Be specific, human and patient. Quality conversations beat large numbers.
