Keyword Research: How to Find What Your Customers Search For

· 2 min read

Keyword research tells you what your customers type into Google. Without it, you risk writing content nobody searches for, or ignoring the searches that would bring buyers.

Start with your customers

Before using any tool, write down:

  • The problems your product or service solves.
  • The questions customers ask you.
  • The words they use, which are often simpler than your industry terms.

Understand search intent

Every search has a purpose. The four main types are:

  1. Informational: learning something, such as "how to choose running shoes".
  2. Commercial: comparing options, such as "best CRM for small business".
  3. Transactional: ready to act, such as "buy running shoes online".
  4. Navigational: looking for a specific site or brand.

Match your page to the intent. A product page should not try to rank for a how-to search, and a blog post will struggle to rank for a clear buying search.

Find keyword ideas

  • Type your topic into Google and look at the suggestions and "People also ask" boxes.
  • Check the related searches at the bottom of the results.
  • Use keyword tools such as Google Keyword Planner, Search Console data or paid tools to see search volume and difficulty.
  • Look at what competitors rank for.
  • Read customer emails, reviews and forum questions.

Choose keywords wisely

Look at three things together:

  • Relevance: does it match what you sell or do?
  • Demand: do enough people search for it?
  • Competition: can you realistically rank?

New sites usually do better targeting specific, longer phrases, called long-tail keywords, such as "waterproof running shoes for wide feet" rather than "running shoes".

Organise keywords into topics

Group related keywords by theme and assign each group to one page. Avoid creating several pages that target the same phrase, since they compete with each other.

Check the results

Search the keyword yourself. Look at what already ranks and the type of content, then decide if you can produce something clearly better or more useful.

Keep updating

Search habits change. Review your keywords regularly with Search Console data.
