On-Page SEO Checklist: What to Fix on Every Page

· 2 min read

On-page SEO covers everything you control on the page itself. Use this checklist for new pages and when you review old ones.

1. One clear topic per page

Decide the main topic and search intent of the page. If a page tries to cover everything, it will rank for nothing.

2. Title tag

  • Include the main keyword near the start where natural.
  • Keep it concise, roughly 50 to 60 characters, so it is not cut off.
  • Make it appealing. It is your headline in search results.

3. Meta description

It does not directly decide rankings, but a clear description of 140 to 160 characters can increase clicks. Describe the benefit and match what the page delivers.

4. URL

Short, readable and descriptive: /seo-checklist is better than /page?id=4382. Avoid changing URLs without redirects.

5. Headings

Use one H1 that states the topic, then H2 and H3 headings to organise sections. Headings help readers scan and help search engines understand structure.

6. Content quality

  • Answer the searcher's question fully and clearly.
  • Write for people, in plain language.
  • Include examples, data you can verify and practical steps.
  • Keep it current, and remove or update outdated information.
  • Do not repeat the same keyword unnaturally.

7. Images

Compress images so pages load fast. Use descriptive file names and alt text that describes the image for people who use screen readers. Do not stuff keywords into alt text.

8. Internal links

Link to related pages on your site using descriptive anchor text. This helps visitors find more and helps search engines discover and understand your pages.

9. External links

Link to reliable sources where it helps the reader. Open standard links normally, and use proper attributes for sponsored links.

10. Mobile and speed

Check how the page looks and loads on a phone. Slow, cluttered pages lose both visitors and rankings.

11. Structured data

Where relevant, add schema markup, such as article, product, FAQ or local business, so search engines can understand details. Test with Google's tools.

12. Clear call to action

A page that ranks but gives visitors no next step wastes the traffic. Guide them to contact you, buy or read the next page.

Review routine

Once a quarter, look at Search Console for pages with impressions but few clicks, or with positions just below page one. Improving those pages often gives the quickest wins.

Summary

Clear topic, good title, helpful content, fast loading and helpful links form the core of on-page SEO.
