What Is SEO and Why Every Business Needs It

· 2 min read

Search engine optimisation, or SEO, is the work of making your website easier for search engines to understand and more worthy of showing to people who search. When someone types a question or a need into Google, SEO helps your business appear in the results.

Why SEO matters

People search when they are ready to learn or buy. Unlike an advert that interrupts, search results meet people when they are actively looking. A business that appears for the right searches gets visitors who already have an interest.

Another benefit is that organic traffic, unlike paid ads, does not stop the moment you stop paying. SEO takes time to build, but the results can last and compound.

The four parts of SEO

  1. Technical SEO. The site must be fast, secure, mobile friendly and easy for search engines to crawl and index.
  2. On-page SEO. Each page should clearly target a topic, with a good title, headings, content and internal links.
  3. Content. Pages that answer real questions, written for people, give you something worth ranking.
  4. Off-page SEO. Links and mentions from other trustworthy sites show that others value your work.

How search engines decide

Google looks at relevance (does this page match the search?), quality (is it helpful, accurate and trustworthy?) and experience (is it fast and easy to use?). Nobody outside Google knows every factor, and it changes over time. The best long-term approach is to build a genuinely useful site.

Types of SEO

  • Local SEO: for businesses serving a local area, such as clinics, restaurants and trades.
  • E-commerce SEO: optimising product and category pages.
  • B2B and service SEO: targeting problem-based searches that lead to enquiries.

What SEO is not

  • It is not a trick to rank overnight.
  • It is not keyword stuffing.
  • It is not buying cheap links.

Shortcuts can lead to penalties that are hard to recover from.

How long does it take?

It typically takes months to see meaningful results, and sooner for small, low-competition goals. Competition, the age of your site and the quality of your work all matter.

Is SEO worth it?

For most businesses with something people search for, yes. It works best as part of a mix with other marketing.

Summary

SEO makes your business visible at the moment people are looking. It rewards patience, quality and technical care.
