Content Strategy for SEO: Topic Clusters That Build Authority
Many businesses publish blog posts without a plan and wonder why traffic does not grow. A better approach is to organise your content around the topics your customers care about.
The idea of topic clusters
A topic cluster has two parts:
- A pillar page: a broad, thorough guide to a main topic.
- Cluster pages: more detailed articles on specific questions within that topic, each linking to the pillar and to each other.
For example, a pillar on "Facebook advertising for small business" with cluster articles on budgets, targeting, creative and tracking. Together they show depth, and the internal links help both readers and search engines.
Step 1: Choose your core topics
List the three to six topics most closely tied to what you sell. These should match real customer needs and your expertise.
Step 2: Research questions
For each topic, collect the questions people ask: from search suggestions, "People also ask", customer emails, sales calls and forums. Group them by stage:
- Awareness: people learning about a problem.
- Consideration: people comparing solutions.
- Decision: people ready to choose a provider.
Step 3: Plan the content
Map each question to a page and decide its format. Make sure each page has a clear purpose and does not compete with another page for the same keyword.
Step 4: Create content that earns its place
- Answer the question completely.
- Add real experience, examples and original insight.
- Keep information accurate and updated.
- Make it easy to scan with clear headings.
Step 5: Link intentionally
Each cluster page should link to the pillar and to closely related pages. Add a clear call to action on pages that attract buying-stage readers.
Step 6: Review and refresh
After a few months, review which pages rank, which stall and which are outdated. Update strong pages, merge overlapping ones and fill gaps.
Common mistakes
- Writing about topics only because they are popular.
- Publishing thin, repetitive articles.
- Ignoring existing pages that could be improved.
- Having no link between related posts.

Plan content around a few topics, cover them in depth and link them together. Quality and structure beat volume.
